ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION REMAINS TOP OF THE AGENDA AS ENVIRONMENT AGENCY APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR

24/01/2005 - Tricia Henton has been appointed Director of Environmental Protection for the Environment Agency. A past Chief Executive of the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Tricia Henton brings vast expertise in environmental policy and regulation to the Environment Agency for England and Wales.
Chief Executive of the Environment Agency Barbara Young said:

"I am very pleased that we have been able to persuade Tricia to join the team. Her experience across a wide range of environmental issues and her in-depth involvement with regulation and business fits her excellently for this role. I am looking forward to working with Tricia as part of the Directors team here."

Tricia, who has worked for both the public and private sector, is looking forward to her new role. She said:

" I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Environment Agency. I have always been passionate about the environment and have spent nearly all my working life trying to protect and improve it in ways which take forward the need for social and economic progress. I look forward with enthusiasm to helping the Environment Agency take forward its agenda of sustainable development."

Tricia Henton's career has encompassed a broad range of roles advising on environment regulation, policy and risk assessment. At the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, where Tricia was first Director of Environmental Strategy and then Chief Executive from 1995, she directed production of the national waste strategy and SEPA’s environmental strategy. Prior to this role from 1983 she established an environmental consultancy business, Aspinwall & Co Ltd. In addition to building the business, her technical work encompassed waste, water and corporate environmental report auditing.

Tricia chairs the Forestry Commissioners Advisory Panel and Defra's Regulatory Agencies Strategy Board. She is a member of the RSPB Council and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Advisory Committee.

Tricia is a past president of the Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management and is a fellow of the Geological Society of London reflecting her geological background. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2002.

Tricia’s interests and activities outside of work include hill walking, bird watching and travel, with a particular interest in the history, geography and culture of the Middle East.

Tricia Henton, who replaces Andrew Skinner following his retirement, will take up her new post on 7 March 2005.

The Environment Agency for England and Wales is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), set up under the Environment Act 1995, to take an integrated approach to environmental protection and enhancement in England and Wales. The Agency has major responsibilities for controlling industrial pollution and wastes management, regulation of the water environment, and for protection against flooding from rivers and the sea. The Environment Agency’s primary aim is to protect and improve the environment and make a contribution towards the delivery of sustainable development through the integrated management of air, land and water.
