Agency Wales are planning to strengthen 400
metres of sand dunes near Pwllheli to offer
some flooding protection on the Afon Erch
flood plain. The section is approximately
1.2km east of Pwllheli. The Cambrian Railway
and the Glan y Don Industrial Estate are within
the area to be protected. The works, which
will be subject to planning permission, are
due to be carried out this autumn before the
winter storms. The plans will be on public
display in Pwllheli from 23 - 27 May 2005.

Manager, Environment Agency Wales said: 'In
November 2000 there was a severe storm, with
waves attacking and eroding the dunes to such
an extent that we had to repair them with
material brought in from outside. Since that
time we have installed and maintained a line
of dune fencing designed to encourage the
accumulation of wind-blown sand.
'The new works are intended to ensure that
the dunes will not be breached during the
next 10 years while a permanent long-term
solution to the problem of tidal flooding
is investigated. Various options are being
considered within the context of the Shoreline
Management Plan, produced by Gwynedd Council’s
Coast Protection Unit.'
Information on the project and details of
the proposed alternative designs will be exhibited
at a public display in the reception area
of Gwynedd Council offices in Pwllheli from
Monday 23 to Friday 27 May 2005. People are
invited to view and comment on the proposals.
As far as possible, these comments will be
taken into account in the final design. In
addition to the display, on Wednesday 25 May,
Environment Agency Wales staff will be there
to answer any questions.
