RIVER SEVERN CLEAN UP BY LOCAL CANOE CLUB

29/06/2005 - To help prepare
for Shrewsbury’s river festival weekend on
July 9 /10, the Environment Agency and other
organisations will on Saturday 2 July support
a clean up of the banks of the River Severn
by members of Shrewsbury Canoe Club.
A stretch of the river, which loops around
the town centre from Frankwell down to the
weir and on to Atcham, will be swept by club
members paddling kayaks and canoes. With the
aid of litter grabbers, gloves and bags they
intend to pick up litter and assorted debris
as well as retrieving life belts that are
regularly thrown into the water by vandals.
The river festival is the first to be held
for nearly half a century and looks set to
re-establish an old tradition.
Various agencies have given their support,
including the Environment Agency, Shrewsbury
and Atcham Borough Council and the Shrewsbury
River Users’ Group (SHRUG). The Environment
Agency has provided a supply of rugged protective
gloves as a contribution to the clean-up.
