28/07/2005 - Significant places and stories connected to Australia's rich Indigenous heritage will be conserved thanks to funding from the Australian Government's Indigenous Heritage Programme, the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, announced today.
Under the programme, $2.6 million will be allocated to help identify previously unknown Indigenous heritage places, assist Indigenous communities to retain and interpret heritage places, improve protection of Indigenous sites and develop and implement Indigenous tourism projects.

"The Indigenous Heritage Programme is an exciting example of the Australian Government combining resources with the talents and enthusiasm of local Indigenous groups to protect the places that are part of our nation's heritage fabric," Senator Campbell said.

"Fifty-five projects-12 in the Northern Territory, 11 in Queensland, nine in Western Australian, six in New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania and five in Victoria-will benefit from the initial round of funding provided by this important new programme," he said.

Projects funded include:

$50,000 to develop a detailed management plan to conserve and rehabilitate the Brewarrina Fish Traps in New South Wales - which was recently included on the National Heritage List
$43,000 to conserve around 36 rockholes in the Kaltukatjara area intrinsically linked to the Rainbow Serpent creation story (Northern Territory)
$15,500 for an Indigenous photographic exhibition featuring heritage places in Woorabinda and the Torres Strait (Queensland)
$25,380 to enable the Kaurna people in South Australia to negotiate the care, control and conservation of their significant heritage sites
$100,000 for the assessment of identified cave and engraving sites in Tasmania
$90,700 to create the Worawa Dreaming Trail in Victoria
$60,000 for the restoration and transformation of the Karalundi Mission building into a museum (Western Australia)
"Funding initiatives, such as the Indigenous Heritage Programme, help build a new insight into heritage places around Australia, helping us all to better understand and appreciate our nation's diverse heritage," Senator Campbell said.
