04/07/2005 - Australians will be able to learn more about the life of one of nation's greatest sporting heroes through the Don Bradman Heritage Trail, the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell said today.
"The trail will recognise Sir Donald's outstanding contribution to Australia's heritage," Senator Campbell said.

"The Australian Government is providing $50,000 to establish the Don Bradman Heritage Trail to incorporate key places that promote the life, story and achievements of one of Australia's greatest heroes and sportsmen.

"There are many places around the country that are associated with this great cricketer. Many are prominent sporting places today, such as the Sydney Cricket Ground, Adelaide Oval and the WACA.

"Yet as Sir Donald's affectionate nickname, 'the Boy from Bowral', reveals there are also other, more important places that played a role his life.

"This far-reaching virtual and physical heritage trail will help visitors explore places such as Bradman's birthplace at Cootamundra, the Bradman Museum at Bowral and the State Library of South Australia where the Bradman Collection is housed.

"Visitors will be able to go to these places either on line, via a website containing maps, images and interpretive material or visit them in person.

"The Bradman Heritage Trail is being developed by the Bradman Foundation in partnership with the Cootamundra Shire Council and the State Library of South Australia and will eventually incorporate all those places in Australia, and possibly overseas, that are central to the Bradman story.

"Funding this important project will enable all Australians experience the places that played a significant role in life of one of Australia's great modern heroes.

"We also believe cricket buffs from around the world will be attracted to this new presentation of Australian heritage," Senator Campbell said.
