20/07/2005 - Environment Agency Wales is launching a number of major initiatives at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells next week (18 – 21 July) which emphasis its commitment to the environment of Wales.
Carwyn Jones, the National Assembly’s Minister for Environment Planning and Countryside, is scheduled to be on our stand in the Countryside Care Area at 12:40hrs on Tuesday 19 July to receive a copy of our Report on the Sustainable Fisheries Programme in Wales. The Programme is underpinned with £2.4 million funding from the Assembly Government and the Report outlines progress and refers to some of the main initiatives completed during the last three years.

The Minister will also launch the consultation on our Corporate Strategy for 2006 – 2011, Creating a Better Place and our Annual Report for Wales on the stand at 13:30 on the same day (Tuesday). Also present at these events will be our Chairman Sir John Harman, Board Member for Wales, Dr Malcolm Smith and Director Wales Dr Helen Phillips.

During the show we will have a strong emphasis on pollution prevention, including adopting best farming practices and minimising waste. Our display in our main stand will convey our key message that we are working with business, including the farming industry, the Welsh Assembly Government and society as a whole to make our environment cleaner and healthier.

Discussions between the Agency and countryside and farming groups will take place throughout the week. Agency Director Wales Dr Helen Phillips will meet representatives from the Farmers Union of Wales (FUW), National Farmers Union (NFU), the Country Land and Business Association (CLBA), and other key stakeholder groups. These discussions will include possible actions to tackle pollution from cypermethrin sheep dip and how farmers can be prepared for the new Cross Compliance visits.

All well as our main stand in the Countryside Care Area we will have a presence in the sheep area, near the angling pond and with the Wales Young Farmers Clubs. We will be talking to farmers, angling enthusiasts and the wider public about how they can help us to protect and improve the environment across all parts of Wales.

Dr Helen Phillips said: "Our presence at the Show gives us a tremendous opportunity to meet a wide range of people and organisations who all have an interest in a better environment for Wales. We are looking forward to welcoming a large number of visitors to our stand and further raise their awareness of key challenges that we all face if we are to live in a sustainable way."
