18/08/2005 “The Environmental Affairs and Tourism portfolio has continued to move to the centre-stage of Government delivery in South Africa – and with this move the importance of quality leadership has intensified.” These were the words of Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Environmental Affairs & Tourism, announcing the decision of Cabinet to approve a new Chief Executive Office and a new Deputy Director General for the Department.
“It is my great pleasure to confirm that Ms. Nosipho Jezile, formerly our Chief Director of Social Responsibility, Policy and Projects, has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Department,” said the Minister. “I am equally pleased to welcome Mr. Boy Ngobeni, as our new Deputy Director General (DDG) for Corporate Affairs. Mr Ngobeni joins us from the Office of the Premier in Gauteng where he has been the Chief Director: Strategic HR & Management Services since 2003.”

The position of COO became vacant when Ms. Pamela Yako was promoted to become the new Director General of the Department in April. The DDG’s post is newly created, and will inter alia oversee strategic leadership, transformation, HR support, legal services and effective communication within the Department.

Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile has served as head of Social Responsibility, Policy and Projects for the Department since July 2003. Formerly the Director: Environmental Management in the Eastern Cape provincial Department, and Regional Programme Leader in the Eastern Cape for the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, she holds a BSC Degree in Biochemistry and Physiology from the University of the Western Cape and a Post-Graduate Diploma in mathematics and physical science.

Prior to his appointment in the Premier’s Office, Boy Daniel Ngobeni was Executive Manager: Human Resources of the SA Management Development Institute (SAMDI). He holds BAdmin and BAdmin(Hon) degrees from the University of Limpopo, and is currently reading for a Master’s Degree in Leadership Performance and Change at the University of Johannesburg.

“These two individuals are both exceptionally talented, qualified and experienced,” said the Minister. “I know that their contribution to our Department and to Environmental Affairs and Tourism in South Africa, will add even greater impetus to our successes.”
