Agency Wales is carrying out a pollution prevention
campaign in Greenfield, Flintshire. The Greenfield
Stream flows directly to the Dee Estuary,
which is a designated Special Area of Conservation,
supporting essential tidal mud flat and salt
marsh habitats.
During the campaign, Agency officers will
be visiting local businesses and smallholdings
to offer help and advice on best practice
when using and storing oils and chemicals.
They will also identify opportunities for
reducing waste and on how to save money by
using resources more efficiently.
Visits have already begun and will continue
throughout the autumn and winter. Additional
pollution prevention work continues in the
form of water quality improvement monitoring,
pollution incident monitoring by the Agency,
and sewer surveys carried out by Welsh Water.
Environment Agency Wales is also involved
with the creation and improvement of community
fisheries, in partnership with Flintshire
County Council. This work includes removing
the dangerous old fishing platforms (pegs),
and replacing them with new embankments, with
disabled access, or "Buddy" pegs.
The work has been designed using materials
such as recycled plastic stakes and boards,
and other materials.
Dawn Beech, an Agency Environment Officer
said: 'We aim to raise local awareness and
create a sense of ownership of the Greenfield
Stream and surrounding area. Improvements
will continue, to enhance fish spawning areas
and wildlife habitats, and create a more natural
environment that can be enjoyed by all.'
