from the Environment Agency’s Fisheries and
Ecological Appraisal teams carried out a fish
rescue on the Montgomery Canal at Llanymynech,
on the Shropshire/Powys border.
The rescue was carried out to enable maintenance
work to be carried out on a bridge located
on that stretch of the canal. The work requires
a small section of the canal to be drained.
The work has been carried out in conjunction
with British Waterways and Powys County Council.
About 500 fish of mixed species which included
Roach, Rudd Perch, Tench and Pike were rescued
from a 50m stretch of canal. They have been
moved to another stretch of the canal.
Our Area Fisheries and Recreation Team leader
Mike Exeter says: ‘The operation has gone
really well and we’ve been able to remove
as many fish as possible. This has been an
ideal example of organisations working together
so that the work can be carried out without
compromising fish welfare.’
