ENVIRONMENT AGENCY HOLDS SURGERIES TO DISCUSS EASTCROFT APPLICATION

Environmental Panorama
London – United Kingdom
December of 2005

08/12/2005 - Next Monday and Tuesday (12 and 13 December 2005) the Environment Agency is holding surgeries to give people living in the areas near the incinerator the chance to discuss our progress with the Waste Recycling Group’s application for a Permit under the Pollution Prevention and Control Legislation (PPC) for its Eastcroft Municipal Waste Incinerator.

The surgeries will be held on Monday 12 December 2005 at Bakersfield community Centre or Tuesday 13 December 2005 at our offices at Trentside, West Bridgford.

Our technical staff will be on hand to discuss the application and its determination. If possible, we will also be able to deal with general questions about the incinerator and its operation.

People wanting to attend the surgery will need to book an appointment. We will work to see as many people as possible but there will be a limited amount of appointments. Groups of up to three people are welcome to attend. We have already invited people who commented on the application to attend the event.

In order to book and appointment, people should contact Jayne Widdowson on 0115 8463725 or email Jayne.widdowson@Environment-Agency.gov.uk. Appointments are available both daytime and early evening for either day.

The application, received on 18 April 2005 includes the two existing waste-burning chambers and a request to install and operate a third waste-burning chamber, which would feed into the existing stack.

The PPC regulations were implemented in 1999 to protect the environment as a whole by preventing and controlling emissions to air, land and water in an integrated way. In order to get a Permit, the incinerator will have to meet the new, much tighter emission limits, set by the Waste Incineration Directive.

A PPC Permit will only be issued when we are satisfied that Eastcroft’s operation and that of the proposed expansion will not impact on the environment and human health. We expect that the consideration of the application will be concluded by the end of December 2005.
