COULD YOU HELP US CREATE A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE?

10/01/2006 - Imagine if you could play a truly active role in your local community. It's a real possibility if you join one of the Environment Agency¡¦s Regional Advisory Committees.

Whatever your views and interests there could be an important role for you.
Meeting four times a year, members bring their knowledge and ideas to the table and discuss how to improve and protect the environment.

The Environment Agency is looking for new members to join one of two committees. The Regional Environment Protection Advisory Committee (REPAC) focuses on the Environment Agency's environmental protection duties. The Regional Fisheries, Ecology & Recreation Advisory Committee (RFERAC), looks at how it improves and develops fisheries, ecology, recreation and river navigation.

The Environment Agency wants its members to act as:

Advisors - to provide informed advice, from those that are regulated and from independent experts
Networkers - to help the Environment Agency form new partnerships and influence the agendas of others
Critical friends - to constructively challenge the Environment Agency's approach and monitor and advise on its achievements
Howard Davidson, Regional Director for the Environment Agency Southern Region said: "Our committees perform a vital role by objectively looking at our work and providing us with advice. It is important that we attract people who have a sound knowledge of their local area and an interest in the environment

"The Committees are made up of members from business, industry, academia and the community. It is vital that members represent a wide range of views and opinions, so we are encouraging people from all backgrounds to apply. We are especially keen to attract people from groups that are currently under represented, particularly individuals from black and ethnic minority backgrounds and women".

Anyone interested in applying for membership of either committee should contact Lisa Guiel at the Environment Agency on 01903 832023 for an application form.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 10 February 2006 and interviews will be held on Tuesday 7 March 2006.
