Agency has been working with the community
around the new Rylands Wall flood defence
to involve them in the design of artwork
commissioned to enhance the new flood-wall.
In partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council
and British Waterways, the Environment Agency
has commissioned local artist Hilary Cartmel
to design and make the series of six themed
panels at a cost of about £14,000.
Thirty local residents attended a workshop
with the artist to ensure that the final
design is in line with the wishes of the
community. Hilary Cartmel has also worked
with over 100 children from local schools
to develop her ideas of what the community
would like.
The panels, which will be made of stainless
steel and brass, will be fixed to the flood-wall
at intervals from Turnover Bridge to Thane
Road. They will reflect the life of the
area, both past and present, and represent
the following themes:
The working canal
the 1930’s lido
the flood wall
a timeline and information panel
leisure boating
walking and nature
We expect the plaques to be ready for installation
sometime in May, when residents will be
invited to a formal unveiling ceremony.
Project Manager Nicholas Adjei says: "This
is a chance for people to make their own
mark on the new flood-wall and we hope that
they will enjoy taking part in the creation
of something that will both enhance the
area and represent their community for many
years to come. It’s all about making the
world around us a better place."
