14/02/2006 - On Monday, February 13th, WWF Spain urged the Spanish Environment Ministry to reduce CO2 emission allowances to the industry, handing a petition letter to the Spanish Environment Minister, Mrs. Cristina Narbona. WWF members posed in front of the ministry building with 23 STOP CO2 signs, symbolising the annual CO2 reductions of 23 million tons that the government should enforce in the next National Allocation Plan (NAP). Together with the petition to the minister, WWF started an online action for the Spanish public to urge the government to combat climate change by reducing the number of emission allowances to the industry.

Shortly before the Kyoto Protocol celebrated its first anniversary, WWF Spain pointed out that Spain is the EU country that is farthest away from meeting the Kyoto target. WWF Spain highlighted the need to reduce the number of CO2 emission allowances in the second NAP - in particular for the power sector, in order support a switch from coal to clean.

Mar Asunción, Head of WWF Spain's Climate Change Programme, explained: “The Government can’t loose this opportunity and must force the industry to do their part for the achievement of the Spanish commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. Otherwise all the citizens will have to bear the costs.”
