ENVIRONMENT AGENCY AWARD FOR LEEK BUILDING SOCIETY

10/04/2006 - On Tuesday 11 April 2006 the Environment Agency will present a cheque for £100 to Britannia Building Society for the purchase of ‘green’ items and equipment to encourage their recycling activities.

Environment Management Team Leader, Roger Grainger, will present the cheque to Britannia's Policy & Compliance Manager, Mark Kelsall at Britannia House, Leek, at 10.30am.

It has been awarded to celebrate the Environment Agency’s tenth birthday this month and in recognition of the commitment of Britannia’s management and staff to environmentally sustainable practices.

The building society's Leek head office, which employs over 2000 staff, has formed a Green Group consisting of forty employees who promote sustainable practices within the company.

Roger Grainger is currently a member of the Staffordshire Green Awards Committee, who present a number of prizes to Staffordshire's Green Champions - organisations and businesses who are committed to improve the environment.

Although Britannia came second in their Staffordshire Green Awards group and did not receive a cash award towards further environmental work, Roger was impressed by their application. He has been working with the company's enthusiastic "Green Group" to promote further environmental work and reduce waste.

This year, the Society is considering practices such as energy efficiency, intelligent lighting, composting and collection of surface water. Roger has arranged for free consultation visits by Envirowise and the Staffordshire Business Network. The company will also be looking to promote sustainable practices at their 250 UK branches in the near future.

Roger says: "It has been encouraging to see the enthusiasm shown by the company's Green Group and the steps they have taken to reduce the carbon footprint of the group as a whole. They are setting an excellent example to other companies.

"They were already demonstrating good practices such as recycling, car sharing and switch-off campaigns but they can widen the search for high impact activities which can affect their environmental emissions significantly and reduce costs. We hope that our cash award will enable them to do even more to help protect our environment".
