New York, 1 - 12 May 2006 - Meeting in its 14th session at UN Headquarters in New York from 1-12 May, the Commission on Sustainable Development works toward identifying the barriers and constraints, as well as the lessons learned and best practices, in four largely interlinked areas: energy for sustainable development, industrial development, air pollution/atmosphere and climate change.

The Commission on Sustainable Development is the United Nation’s high-level forum responsible for ensuring follow up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and monitoring progress towards achieving internationally-agreed development goals.

According to CSD Chair Aleksi Aleksishvili (Finance Minister, Georgia), the issues under consideration by the Commission are unparalleled in their importance for meeting the Millennium Development Goal of halving extreme poverty by 2015.

Industrial development

UNEP DTIE, its business and industry partners and related stakeholders will make a contribution to CSD on the theme of "Industrial Development". In preparation for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, UNEP facilitated the development by business and industry organisations of sector reports on the implementation of Agenda 21. Twenty two industry sectors were covered.
At CSD14 UNEP will be releasing thirty industry sector “Report Cards” compiled into a "Class of 2006: Industry Report Cards on Environment and Social Responsibility" that review progress since 2002. This will be done at a publication launch on 10 May involving a high level, forward-looking, multi-stakeholder debate on challenges in industry progress towards environmental and social responsibility.

Energy for sustainable development

DTIE will also present it’s Sustainable Consumption and Production activities and contributions during two side events: “Facing the Implementation Challenge: Marrakech Task Forces on Sustainable Consumption and Production” and “Energy Efficiency through Sustainable Consumption and Production" showing the contributions of SCP to energy efficiency.

Air pollution/atmosphere

UNEP in association with the International Association of Public Transport - UITP and the African Association of Public Transport – UATP organizes a side event on "Reducing energy consumption and GHG emission from urban transport".

In an effort to raise awareness on existing sustainable transport solutions, speakers from cities with proven sustainable transport solutions will describe experiences and best practices for: increasing energy efficiency using present technology, reducing dependence on fossil fuel and, decreasing GHG gas emissions from the urban transport sector. In addition, the side event will highlight challenges facing developing countries with specific attention to the African continent, in anticipation of the next CSD cycle’s focus on Africa.
