- Keen environmentalist and budding cross-Channel
swimmer, Corinne Thorpe, from Southam in Warwickshire,
has been appointed to serve on the Environment
Agency’s Midlands Regional Fisheries, Ecology
and Recreation Advisory Committee (RFERAC).
Corinne has a degree in Environmental
Sciences from the University of Sussex in Brighton.
For the past four years, she has been a Site Manager
in the Conservation, Access and Recreation Department
of Severn Trent Water, managing reservoir sites
across Warwickshire, Leicestershire and south
Derbyshire.
Previously, she worked for conservation
charity BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers).
She is currently a member of the Wildlife Trust,
the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
(RSPB) and Upton Warren canoe club.
An outdoor enthusiast at heart,
in her spare time she enjoys the physical and
mental challenges of sports such as mountain biking
and canoeing, especially white water kayaking,
as well as team adventure races across remote
countryside. She is also part of a team that plans
to swim the English Channel during 2007.
As well as a strong interest
in water sports, Corinne is passionate about conservation
and people’s rights to access the countryside.
Speaking of her appointment,
she says: "The work of RFERAC combines my
personal and professional interests very well.
I am delighted to have been chosen to serve on
this committee and I look forward to being able
to make a contribution to the future plans of
the Environment Agency. In particular, I am keen
to promote conservation and to get user groups
to work together and make it possible for everybody
to enjoy the environment."

RFERAC (Regional Fisheries,
Ecology and Recreation Advisory Committee) is
an advisory committee that makes recommendations
on the following areas:
operational performance with
regard to fisheries, recreation, navigation and
related conservation matters
issues of concern in relation
to fisheries, recreation, navigation and conservation.
exploring the implications of
national policy proposals for fisheries, recreation,
navigation and related conservation matters for
the Midlands Region
The committee is made up of
a Chairman appointed by the Secretary of State
for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Chairmen
of RFDC and REPAC and eighteen other members with
knowledge of:
Fisheries and angling
Recreation
Ecology and conservation
Navigation issues.
The committee meets quarterly.
Members of the public and press are welcome to
attend as non-participatory observers. A full
