- The Environment Agency has served an enforcement
notice, banning a waste transfer station in Dartford
from accepting deliveries of waste after it was
found to be storing more waste than its licence
allows.
The site, at 150a Lower Hythe
Street, Dartford, is currently being operated
by Wicked Waste Limited. The waste management
licence issued by the Environment Agency allows
the company to accept skip waste such as paper,
wood, plastic, bricks and metal.
When Environment Agency Officers
visited the site, they found excessive quantities
of waste were being stored on site, vastly over
the limits specified in the licence. Such a large
volume of waste could pose a risk to the environment
and the public. The Environment Agency has served
an enforcement notice on the site and ordered
staff to stop accepting waste until the volume
stored is within the limits permitted.
Joanne Casey, Environment Officer,
for the Environment Agency said:
"We regulate the
waste industry to protect the environment by making
sure waste ends up in places where it can be treated
properly. When companies break the rules of a
waste management licence we have to take action
to protect the environment and the public to send
a message to other waste operators thinking of
breaking the rules that they won’t get away with
it."
