TEMPORARY FLOOD DEFENCE WORK AT CARR LANE

Environmental Panorama
International
August of 2006

3-Aug-2006 - The Environment Agency is inviting Gainsborough residents to take a look at our plans to put a temporary bund in place, in addition to the existing flood defence wall at Carr Lane, south of the A631 road crossing at Gainsborough.

A survey of the current defences was carried out in 2004/5. This survey showed the need to support the concrete wall on the former Paul’s Malt site, Carr Lane, upstream of Trent Bridge. We are proposing to carry out the temporary works in August 2006.

The works are important because, the wall, in its current state could be at risk of not working properly during a flood event and potentially local business and residential properties could encounter some flooding.

During the works we plan to do the following:-

Move the stockpile of demolition material currently located near to the wall and excavate earth from directly behind the wall. This will reduce the ground pressure on the wall.
We also intend to build a temporary bund which will act as a flood defence until proposed permanent works are implemented.
We plan to reduce movement in the existing wall by putting in horizontal anchors where needed.
A temporary drainage system will be installed to allow any rainwater trapped behind the bund to drain into the river.
We intend to implement a permanent solution for this defence as part of the proposed wider Gainsborough Frontages Flood Alleviation Scheme works in 2007.

Copies of the plans can be seen at Gainsborough Public Library, Cobden Street, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, DN21 2NG. Tel: 01427 614780 (Hours: Mon & Fri 9.00 - 19.00, Tue-Thur 9.00 – 17.00, Sat 9.30-12.30).

These are also available from the Environment Agency Nick Adjei: Olton Court, 10 Warwick Road, Olton, Solihull, B92 7HX. Tel: 0121 708 4737.

Notes to editors

We want to consult with local people on the intended temporary works and to seek any comments they may have to assist in the preparation of an Environmental Report.

We will launch a further round of public consultation on the permanent replacement of the Carr Lane flood defence and the wider Gainsborough Frontage Flood Alleviation Scheme works in the near future.
