13-Sep-2007 - Fisheries officers from the
Environment Agency will be destocking a
lake of its fish in Wibsey Park, Bradford
tomorrow (Thursday) and moving them to new
homes.
Wibsey Park is owned by Bradford City Council,
and holds many roach. The council called
in the Environment Agency to help manage
the numbers of fish in the lake.
The destocking is taking place to prevent
fish dying from low oxygen levels in the
pond. Last summer the oxygen levels in the
lake fell because of the warm weather conditions,
and the Environment Agency is working to
prevent further falls in the fish population.
Environment Agency fisheries officer Pete
Turner said: The lake is very shallow,
so it can get quite warm in the summer months,
and this encourages fish to breed rapidly.
To stop the lake getting overcrowded, the
best solution is to move the fish to a new
pond or lake which has lost fish because
of natural causes or pollution. This helps
bring numbers back up to a sustainable level.
Officers will use giant nets to capture
most of the roach. The last time that fisheries
officers destocked the lake, nine bicycles
were retrieved.
Local schoolchildren from Wibsey Primary
School will also be at the destocking to
find our more about the Environment Agency
and its fisheries work, and the importance
of looking after your local environment.
Next eleven Environment Agency flood drop
in session

Agency is inviting people living in areas
affected by the recent floods to come to
one of the next eleven drop in sessions,
which take place during September and October
2007 in Shropshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire
and Gloucestershire.
Our staff will be on hand to answer questions
about the flooding, the clean-up operation
and future plans to manage flood risk in
their area. We will be inviting other agencies
to take part so that, together, we can provide
as much information as possible to local
residents.
Flood Risk Manager, Anthony Perry, says:
In the last few weeks we have seen the
heaviest and most intense rainfall for many
years. The widespread flooding that resulted
has caused major disruption and misery to
many people.
We have been working around the clock
with emergency services and other agencies
to defend communities and vital facilities
against the flooding. We are also helping
to get people lives back to normal as quickly
as possible.
As the water levels recede we remain active
in the clean up operation. We are also stepping
up our efforts to talk to local communities
and answer their questions about the flooding
in their area.
All the following drop in sessions will
be open between 3pm and 8pm. People are
welcome to call in at any time between those
