2 November 2007 - As a part of a new strategic initiative, the National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) at University of Aarhus will double the amount of Research Professors. It is NERI’s intention that each of the 7 new full professors will act as driving forces in the scientific development.

In 1999 NERI engaged the first Research Professor, and since then 6 more joined in. Now, NERI wishes to double the number of Professors as a part of a new strategic initiative.

It is NERI’s experience that Research Professors are very active as driving forces in the scientific development. By attracting scientists, Ph.D. students and larger national and internal projects they contribute to the dynamic and growth of the research groups.

In addition, the new professorships meet two important goals for the university by:

strengthening the scientific basis for NERI’s support to the decision making of environmental authorities
Increasing research- and educational-cooperation with the faculties of the university.
The full professorships will be established within the following areas:

Ecological modelling of marine systems
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen ecological modelling through basic and applied research within marine ecology with focus on processes in pelagic systems.

Management of marine systems
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen research activities within management of marine habitats and ecosystems through the development of management models as well as statistical tools and methods to examine status, trends and development of marine ecosystems.

Terrestrial Ecology
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen research leading to the understanding of factors controlling the status, development and quality of terrestrial ecosystems and habitats as well as the functioning of the ecosystems in order to improve the monitoring of natural habitats and the management of agro-ecosystems.

Catchment management
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen research leading to the understanding of factors controlling the sources, mobilisation, pathways, transport and retention of sediment, nutrients and pesticides in order to develop methods and models at catchment scales, and thereby underpin improvement of the monitoring and management of catchments.

Restoration of freshwater ecosystems
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen research leading to the understanding of factors controlling the status, development and quality of freshwater ecosystems and habitats as well as the functioning of freshwater ecosystems, and thereby underpin the development of methods to restore freshwater ecosystems.

Emergent infectious diseases research
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen research leading to the understanding of the occurrence, dispersal, adaptation, and activity of opportunistic pathogens and their genes in the environment, as well as the understanding of how they are introduced to human hosts.

Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate and Global processes
The main task for the professor will be to strengthen atmospheric chemistry research with respect to climate and global processes through basic and applied research within the field of contaminants in remote atmospheres and environmental archives of atmospheric pollution.
The positions are expected to be filled by 1 August 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.
