ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE LEAD-ZINC
MINE AT MESTERSVIG, EAST GREENLAND

Environmental Panorama
International
February of 2008

5 February 2008 - This report compiles information about and assesses the environmental impact of the former lead-zinc mine at Mestersvig to document the present state of the environment in areas affected by the mining operation 1956-1963. The report has been prepared on the request by International Molybdenum PLC (InterMoly), who is exploring the molybdenum deposit at Malmbjerget to the south of Mestersvig.

The report documents that the former mine has caused a significant pollution with lead and zinc on land, in the river Tunnelelv and in Kong Oscars Fjord. Mine tailings and spill of concentrate are the main pollution sources. The area surrounding the mine site has been monitored since 1979 demonstrating that both lead and zinc concentrations have decreased in the media monitored: sediments, seaweed and fish. However, Kong Oscars Fjord will be affected by heavy metal pollution for many years.

Control of Pesticides 2006. Chemical Substances and Chemical Preparations

6 February 2008 - Four different groups of products covered by the pesticide regulation were included in the 2006 analytical chemical authority control:
Herbicides containing metamitron, propaquizafop and haloxyfop-ethoxyethyl.
Fungicides containing azoxystrobin, propiconazole, cyprodinil, picoxystrobin and fenpropidin.
Insecticides containing pirimicarb.
Plant growth regulators containing chlormequat chloride, mepiquat chloride and ethephon. All samples were examined for the content of active ingredients and for the content of OPEO and NPEO.

All samples in this years programme complied with the accepted tolerance limits with respect to the content of the active ingredient as specified in Danish Statutory Order on pesticides. None of the examined samples contained OPEO, but one of the samples contained minor concentrations of NPEO. On the label of two products, the content of active ingredient was declared only in g/L, but not in % (w/w) as required and on one product the labelled content given in % was not in accordance with the labelled content given in g/L.
