12, 2008 - Environment Canada has laid fourteen
charges against Jayson Daeninck and Saltwater
Connection, of
Winnipeg, for allegedly importing protected
wildlife species from Indonesia without
a permit, in contravention of Canada's Wild
Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation
of International and Interprovincial Trade
Act.
Ten of the charges stem
from the alleged importation without a permit
of approximately 9,508 kg (over 20,000 lbs)
of live rock based on stony corals, as well
as live species of giant clams, seahorses
and stony corals. These species are protected
under the Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
Flora and the Wild Animal and Plant Protection
and Regulation of International and Interprovincial
Trade Act is the Canadian legislation for
enforcing the international rules in this
country.
Four charges were laid
for allegedly providing false or misleading
information with respect to the imports,
and for providing false or misleading statements
to an officer.
The Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna
and Flora is an international agreement
that sets controls on the worldwide trade
and movement of more than 33,000 animal
and plant species that have been, or may
be, threatened due to excessive commercial
exploitation. The Convention uses an international
permit system to ensure that trade in species
listed under the Convention is legal.
First court appearance
is set for April 7, 2008 in Provincial Court
in Winnipeg.

Minister Named World Economic Forum Young
Global Leader for 2008
OTTAWA - March 12, 2008
- Canada's Environment Minister John Baird
today was named one of the World Economic
Forum's Young Global Leaders for 2008. Minister
Baird is among 245 leading executives, public
figures and intellectuals from around the
world under the age of 40 awarded this honour
in 2008.
"I am honoured
to receive this award," said Minister
Baird. "Like the World Economic Forum,
our Government recognizes that climate change
is one of the greatest challenges facing
the world today. We have demonstrated leadership
by taking real action both at home and on
the world's stage to tackle this issue.
Both Canada and the World Economic Forum
understand that we must work together with
the world towards an integrated and comprehensive
approach to tackling climate change and
air pollution."
Other honourees for
2008 include Ahmad Nader Nadery (Commissioner
of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission)
Anderson Cooper (Anchor, CNN), Ed Miliband
(Minister of the Cabinet Office of the United
Kingdom), and Leonardo DiCaprio (Actor).
Canadian honourees include
Kristine Layfield (Director of Programming,
CBC Television), Aaron Pereira (Founder,
Canada Helps and Vartana); and Eira Thomas,
(Chief Executive Officer and Director, Stornoway
Diamond Corporation).
"Canada is clearly
an international leader. The presence of
Canadians on this list illustrates the esteem
in which we are held around the world,"
said Minister Baird. "Our Government
applauds all the Canadians who were honoured
by the World Economic Forum. Your work is
truly a credit to our great nation."
