ENVIRONMENT AGENCY APPEALS FOR WITNESSES

Michelle Dolphin - 30-Jun-2008 - Members of the public could potentially hold vital clues to a suspected fly-tipping incident in Darley Dale, Derbyshire on 22 May 2008.

The Environment Agency received an allegation from a member of the public reporting that three men travelling in a van deposited tyres on Flash Lane, near Darley Dale, Derbyshire before leaving the location. The suspected vehicle was a distinctive white old style Bedford van with a red flash along the side rising to the top at the rear of the vehicle with the letters ‘cnt’ written above. The number plate, however, had been blanked out using cardboard.

Tim Ross from the Environment Agency said: ‘We would especially like to hear from anyone who might have information about this incident. We are continuing our investigation and looking at all possible avenues. North Derbyshire has experienced a lot of tyre fly-tipping in the past 12 months. This costs the tax payer money to clean up and is simply unacceptable.”

Anyone with knowledge of this suspected fly-tipping can call the Environment Agency’s free 24-hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

The Environment Agency is currently working in partnership with the nine local authorities within Derbyshire to tackle fly-tipping, through the Derbyshire Fly-tipping Project. This project is funded by the Derbyshire Local Area Agreement fund.

Environment Agency to attend Cheltenham Flood Fair

Michelle Dolphin - 1-Jul-2008 - On Thursday 10 July 2008, between 2.00pm and 6.30pm the Environment Agency will be attending Cheltenham Flood Fair, at Cheltenham Town Hall, Imperial Square, Cheltenham to tell people about a new flood watch service and provide advice on how they can help reduce the damage and distress caused by flooding.

The Flood Fair has been organised by Cheltenham Borough Council in conjunction with the National Flood Forum. There will be a variety of flood protection products on show plus advice from the Council, Environment Agency and the National Flood Forum.

The Environment Agency will provide details of the new flood watch service in the area and will be available for advice on how to prepare for flooding. We will also be providing free flood packs to encourage people to do more to prepare.

Flood Risk Manager, Anthony Perry, says “We are working hard to reduce flood risk for people in Cheltenham and the new flood watch is part of the work we are doing. But there is much that people can do themselves to reduce the risk, and to minimise the damage and distress that floods can cause. We hope people will come and talk to us at the Flood Fair and get their free flood pack. For those who cannot attend on the day advice is available on our website www.environment-agency.gov.uk or by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188.”

Environment Agency at Tacklefest

Rita Penman - 4-Jul-2008 - Visitors to Tacklefest 2008 next weekend (12/13) will be able to find out more about the fisheries work carried out by the Environment Agency.

Tacklefest takes place at the Nene Embankment in Peterborough on 12 and 13 July 2008. Fisheries staff will be on the Agency stand to discuss the full range of fisheries and fishing work carried out, including angling participation projects, habitat improvements, fish stocking and many other issues.

Fisheries spokesman Nigel Tomlinson is anticipating a successful event. ‘Tacklefest is always an interesting and enjoyable two days and it is a valuable opportunity to meet with more anglers to talk about our fisheries activities. Whether it’s finding new fishing venues, angling coaching or other fishing related topic, our staff will be on hand to discuss these on the stand.’

As well as Agency staff, Reel People, the organisation for anglers with disabilities, will be available at the venue from 9.30am to 5.00 pm each day to answer questions and offer advice. There will be a range of displays showing how the Environment Agency is improving the fisheries environment and contributing to the nation’s favourite sporting pastime.
