February 2009 - Migratory birds have taken
exceptionally well to the saltwater lake
behind the dike at Højer at the coastal
mudflats off South West Jutland. As many
as 25 species of waterfowl have increased
in numbers since the dike was built in 1982
and the saltwater lake created the following
year. Nine species have declined in number.
The number of geese and waterbirds are respectively
five and six times greater than expected,
while the number of surface-feeding ducks
is very slightly lower than forseen by the
experts.

Local authorities can now obtain an overview
of their impact on climate. With a CO2 calculator
local authorities can work out their emission
of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. This
includes emissions from the local authority's
own units as well as emissions from private
households and businesses in the municipality.
The National Environmental Research Institute
(NERI), Aarhus University has contributed
to development of the CO2 calculator with
the expertise NERI has built in connection
with calculating the Danish emissions of
greenhouse gases for the EU and UN.
