Come and find out about the draft Tidal River Strategy
What: Great Ouse flood management plan drop-in
Where: Denver sluice complex
When: Thursday 1st October 2-7pm.

The Environment Agency is holding a drop in event focusing on the flood management of the Great Ouse and how it may affect the local community.

The event is to be held at the Denver sluice complex on Thursday I October between 2 and 7 pm to allow interested parties have their say on the draft Great Ouse Tidal River Strategy, which covers an area of the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk Fens from Earith to King’s Lynn.

The draft strategy sets out proposals for managing flood risk to people and property over the next 100 years. It takes into account the effects on statutory navigation channels, water quality and the environment within the confines of government spending rules for flood risk.

Over 2,300 properties in the Great Ouse Tidal River floodplain are protected from flooding by the South Level barrier bank and the Tidal River defences. With sea level rises predicted as a result of climate change the number of properties that could be at risk of flooding will rise.

The Great Ouse Tidal River Strategy discusses the options for overcoming the problem of siltation in the Tidal river and the alternatives and preferences for dealing with the difficulties climate change will create.

Sadia Moeed, project manager for the Great Ouse Tidal River Strategy said: “Managing flood risk is an extremely important part of what the Environment Agency does. By creating a 100 year strategy we are able to plan for the future and find solutions for the best way to protect communities now and in the future.”

In carrying out any flood defence works the Environment Agency has to demonstrate that the value of likely damage to assets is greater than the cost of the flood defence works and also to consider the ongoing maintenance of flood defence works.

Staff from the Environment Agency and other partners involved in creating the draft strategy will be available at the drop in session to discuss the draft policies for the area and any concerns the public may have.
