Environment Agency call on companies who handle waste to check they have the correct permits - The Environment Agency is calling on all companies who handle waste to check that they have the correct environmental permits in place to operate legally.

The call comes after a Barrow based operator pleaded guilty, and was fined, for operating a waste transfer station without the necessary permits in place.

Those who handle waste as part of their business must have an environmental permit which places conditions on the business about the amount and types of waste they can accept. It also states the provisions which the site should have in place to ensure that ground and local water courses are protected from potential contamination.

Barry Davies, was fined £2,000 for operating a non regulated facility and order to pay £2865.16 costs.

The Environment Agency carried out an inspection of Mr Davies van in November 2008 in a joint operation with Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria Constabulary. During the inspection Mr Davies admitted he uses his vans to collect and carry waste including bathrooms, kitchen units and general waste from house clearances, which he then stores on a yard. The waste was then held until it was financial viable for it to be sold to a licensed site for disposal. By not holding the correct permit to store waste, he had a financial advantage over other operators.

Matt Crump, Environment Manager at the Environment Agency said, “The environmental permitting regulations are in place to protect people and the environment from activities which could cause harm. Anyone who handles waste as part of their business, should seek advice from the Environment Agency if they are unsure of what permits they need. This will help them to stay on the right side of the law, and ensure that all businesses are operating from a level playing field.”
