03/01/2011 - The Minister of the Environment, Izabella Teixeira, discussed with Chinese authorities the extension of a cooperation agreement. The meeting was held in Brasília last Friday (December 31) with the participation of the Chinese Minister of Water Resources, Chen Lei.

Izabella stressed the importance of partnership with China, which holds 6% of water on the planet. "We will set a new agenda for bilateral work, exploring our potential for cooperation", said the Brazilian minister.

The agreement provides for the expansion of technical cooperation in the planning and management of water resources, areas in which Brazil has recognized excellence worldwide. The Chinese minister said that, for the government of China, "the partnership with Brazil is strategic".

Izabella highlighted China's support on issues of relevant importance in international forums, especially biodiversity and climate change. For her, "there is no difficulty in understandings between the two countries on environmental issues".

Minister Chen said that China has already sent to the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations a proposal to renew the cooperation agreement. The expectation is that the Brazilian government review and adopt the document until the next visit of the Brazilian delegation to China, scheduled for the first quarter of 2011.
