Brazil was nominated to compete for the Future Policy Award 2011, which will choose the most inspiring and innovative forest policies that contribute to the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.

Initiatives from 16 countries compete for the prize, including Bhutan, Costa Rica, Ecuador, United States of America, Finland, Gambia, Guatemala, Nepal, Norway, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Rwanda, Turkey and Vietnam.

Brazil participates with three initiatives, including the Public Forest Management Law, adopted in 2006, which structured the management of forests in the country, set the legal support for forest concessions and created a body to deal with the issue at the federal level, the Brazilian Forest Service. The National Biodiversity Plan, established in 1998, and the Amazon Fund are also candidates.

The contestants were nominated by organizations such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Future Policy Award is sponsored by the World Future Council, an organization that studies international politics based in Germany. This year, the institution chose to reward forest policy initiatives to commemorate the International Year of Forests.

The winners will be announced on September 21, 2011, in a ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York (USA), organized in partnership with the Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Brazil participates in the IMFN Global Forum

21/03/2011
This week (March 21-26), the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) attends the meeting of the Ibero-American Model Forest Network (IAMFN). The event happens as part of the programming of the International Model Forest Network (IMFN) Global Forum, in Burgos, Spain.

"The meeting is an opportunity to know the experiences of other countries on the management of territories where the focus is the sustainable management of forest resources, based on the principles of the Model Forest Network", says the manager of Forest Information at the SFB, Joberto Freitas.

Currently, Brazil has two Model Forests, both in Minas Gerais. But there are plans to develop new initiatives in the states of Pará and Acre. "In Brazil there is great potential to broaden the number of Model Forests", he says.

A Model Forest has a governance model that turns the interests and needs of the communities into strategies for the sustainable development. Currently, the IAMFN comprises 25 Model Forests from 13 countries.

Network - The Brazilian Forest Service represents Brazil at the Ibero-American Model Forest Network (IAMFN) since June 10, 2010. The IAMFN promotes cooperation between Model Forests from 13 countries, enabling the exchange of knowledge and experiences between communities, government institutions and non-governmental organizations, for the improvement of public policies related to sustainable management of natural resources.

The entrance of SFB was approved unanimously during the IAMFN board of director's meeting, on June 10, 2010, which followed the Ibero-American Model Forest Seminar held in São Lourenço, Minas Gerais State, on June 8 and 9, 2010.
