TRIAL ON HOLD AS ENVIRONMENT
AGENCY INVESTIGATES LAFARGE CEMENT MANAGEMENT

Agency is carrying out a full investigation
of management controls and environmental performance
at Lafarge Cement’s Westbury Works in Wiltshire.
A proposed new fuel trial will not be allowed
to start until the investigation is complete
and confidence fully restored.
This follows the announcement by the company
that there had been falsification of the data
relating to cement quality between 2002 and
2004.
"We are extremely concerned that data
on cement quality has been falsified and have
launched a thorough investigation to see if
there are any implications for the environmental
monitoring data," said Tony Owen, area
manager for the Environment Agency.
"At this stage there is no evidence
to suggest problems with environmental data
but we are carrying out a thorough check to
be absolutely certain. We need to be able
to reassure the public.
"Although we don’t have a role in policing
the quality of the cement we do have a major
responsibility for environmental standards."
The Environment Agency is taking the following
action:
Investigating management controls from top
to bottom of the company.
Investigating environmental record keeping
by the company.
Refusing to allow a trial on the use of recycled
liquid fuel (RLF) to start while investigations
are being carried out and until confidence
in the site management is fully restored.
The investigation started last week and will
last at least a month. It has already involved
two rounds of meetings with company directors.
