22/04/2005 - Steve Moore,
Environment Agency Wales, Area Manager, North
visited the Pop In centre at Abbey Road, Bangor
recently (15 April) to see the work for himself
and present certificates to the volunteers.
The entrance to the centre needed a makeover,
which took place at the end of March, when
the volunteers weeded, planted bedding plants
and generally spruced it up.
This project is one of over 1000 registered
under Action Earth (See Notes) since January.
Action Earth plays a major role in supporting
and promoting World Environment Day, celebrated
on 5 June each year (see Notes).
The Centre provides support, information,
resources and advice on good practice for
people who may be experiencing problems. Many
charities, including Cruse, Alcoholics Anonymous,
Relate and others meet there. It also provides
an environment where visitors can relax and
enjoy recreational activities or simply relax.
Steve Moore says: 'It's great to see people
making real efforts to improve the quality
of their environment. This centre is a great
example that improving and protecting our
environment is as much about doing the simple
things to change the way we live and work
as it is about the addressing the global issues
such as climate change.
'Action Earth and World Environment Day provide
great catalysts for communities to take control
and make a difference. 12,000 got involved
in these type of projects last year. This
was a great success and something we are looking
to build on.’
