27/06/2005 - Environment
Agency Wales, working with Newport City Council
have completed £1.9 million of flood
defence work on the River Usk at Isca Road,
Caerleon. Dr Helen Phillips, Director, Environment
Agency Wales officially recognised the completion
of the scheme at a short ceremony on Monday
(13 June).
John Irvine, who represents the area on the
Regional Flood Defence Committee said: ' I
am very pleased that despite considerable
technical challenges at the site, Newport
City Council working with Environment Agency
Wales and its main contractor, Mowlem have
delivered on time and within budget. With
the prospect of global warming and higher
water levels, the defences were raised to
take into account higher future flood risks
and to protect a number of properties and
people. '
The scheme was a partnership project with
contributions from Newport City Council, other
Authorities in Gwent and Powys, Environment
Agency Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.
It was co-ordinated by the Usk Flood Defence
Committee. '
Speaking at the event Dr Phillips said: '
We are really pleased that this scheme affords
a higher level of flood protection to 45 properties
and increased peace of mind to the residents
of Isca Road and Lulworth Road.'
Councillor Ray Truman, Newport City Council's
Deputy Leader and cabinet member for community
safety added: ' Newport City Council is pleased
and proud to have been instrumental in helping
to raise the funding to allow this major scheme
to go ahead. The completion of the scheme
will provide long term protection to the residents
here.'
