04/08/2005 - Keen canoeists
now have more opportunity to enjoy the sport
in Winchester thanks to a donation from the
Environment Agency.
The donation, from the Environment Agency’s
Recreation team in Hampshire, has been given
to the Winchester Canoe Club allowing them
to buy new boats and equipment for members
and other groups who use their facilities.
Heb Leman, Recreational Officer for the Environment
Agency, said: "This new equipment is
essential to Winchester Canoe Club because
it means they can now take on new members
of all ages and abilities. It will give those
people who may not otherwise have the opportunity
to get on the water to experience the fun
of canoeing."
Canoeing is an activity that can be enjoyed
by people of all ages and physical ability.
From foaming white water to meandering rivers,
there are opportunities for both adventure
and relaxation. This donation is a part of
the Environment Agency’s commitment to protect,
improve and promote recreation activities
that improve enjoyment of the water.
Barrie Howe from Winchester Canoe Club said:
"We are very grateful to the Environment
Agency for this funding. This has allowed
us to buy a significant amount of new equipment
which will be of great value to our members
and the other groups that use our facilities.
We will benefit from this for many years to
come."
Visitors to the Hampshire Water Festival
will be able to meet the Environment Agency
and Winchester Canoe Club who will be present
with the new equipment.
