30/09/2005 - The Great Barrier
Reef is being better managed and protected
thanks to the Great Barrier Reef Water Quality
Protection Plan, the Australian Minister for
the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian
Campbell, said today.
The Reef Plan – a partnership between the
Australian and Queensland Governments and
industry and community groups – was launched
in December 2003. The plan addresses the need
to reduce pollutants entering the Reef through
an integrated natural resource management
approach.
Senator Campbell said the second annual report
for the Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Protection
Plan would be released today.
“In 2004–05 we have undertaken significant
action to protect the reef. This includes
establishing a water quality monitoring plan
for the Reef, funding water quality improvement
plans in catchments and helping landholders
to identity and address environmental risks,”
Senator Campbell said.
“This report demonstrates the progress and
major investments governments, industry and
the community have made to protect and conserve
the Great Barrier Reef.
“Reef health is also being addressed through
the National Action Plan for Water Quality
and Salinity and the Queensland Wetlands Programme.
“The Reef is a nationally and internationally
significant icon with outstanding natural,
social and economic values.
“It is vitally important that we continue
to act to preserve the Reef for future generations,”
he said.
